Dancing Queen

Here's the video I promised of Anna tearing it up at the reception over the weekend. This is the child, who when we tell her to dance, declares, "I do not dance".

Weddings & Bluebonnets

This weekend, we road-tripped to Austin for a cousin's wedding. While we were up there, we stopped in Brenham to take some pictures in the Bluebonnets. Naturally, I had a plan for how I wanted the pictures to go (please note our coordinating outfits) but our 2 year old, who was nap-less and hungry and our 5 week old, who detests the sun in his eyes, had other plans.

The wedding was lots of fun and it was good to introduce Jack to the Jurica clan. Anna danced like a maniac (video of that to follow shortly) and drank her fair share of Shirley Temples all night. That, coupled with chocolate cake, led to a wild night on 6th Street for Anna Banana.

5.5 Weeks Old

Jack went to the doctor on Tuesday for a checkup. He now weighs 9 lbs, "something" oz (because I'm a bad, bad mother who didn't write it down when the nurse weighed him) and is 22 in long. This is up from his birth weight of 6 lbs, 11 oz and 20 in.

He's almost smiling. He's given me a few little half-grins but for the most part the only smiles we see happen as he's dosing off and his eyes are rolled back in his head. I'm really looking forward to a big, gummy smile from him soon though. I need some incentive for all of the hard work that I'm putting in--especially during the wee hours of the morning.

His preferred sleeping position...

Typical, eh?

Zapruder Film

One of Anna's favorite activities is going into Jack's room and doing somersaults and exercises on the shag rug. Last night, I was randomly filming a typical night at our house, with Kevin and Anna playing on the rug and happened to catch a phenomenon that we had previously failed to capture. After the "Pilates Instruction," you'll see Anna get up and do her "We Did It!" song and dance. We're not sure where she learned this or if it's her own little creation, but it absolutely cracks us up. Note the little butt-wiggle at the end too. Naturally, she doesn't usually do it on command, so consider yourselves very fortunate to get to see it here.

Jack Attack!

Bathtime=HATE...but, contrary to what these pictures illustrate, he seemed to sort of enjoy the bath last night.

The past two nights have been (dare I say it?) bearable. The 2 hours long, colicky behavior has subsided and he's waking up about two times a night to eat and then back to bed...in his OWN bed at that (own bed=pack n play for now). It's too soon to brag too much about this, but I'm really, really hoping that we're getting on a schedule. I'm beginning to feel a little rested and am not contemplating hurting myself or others today. Progress indeed.

Picasso

I'm not one of those moms who think that their child is exceptionally perfect, more intelligent than the next kid at the playground or any cuter than every other Madison, Morgan and McKenzie at Mother's Day Out but, I have to share this and please tell me if I'm wrong.

This is a picture that Anna drew last night, on her Magnadoodle. It's a person (and I think it might be me):

Just to clarify, you should be able to see the eyes (or at least one of them) the nose, mouth, arms and then the two round-ish, droopy (!) things on the chest are breasts (yeah, we're all about using correct anatomical vernacular around here). That's the belly button under the breasts, of course. The reason that I think that it might be a picture of me is that, due to breast pumping, Anna has seen way more of my naked (not to mention grossly suctioned) breasts and post-pregnancy, mushy tummy (the likeness to my belly is spot-on in her artist's rendering) than any 2 year old should ever be subjected to.

Now, please feel free to put me right in my place here, but is this not a really exceptional drawing for a 2 year old? Seriously? Or is this about normal? And, you should know that she told me beforehand that she was going to draw a person and this is what she did...it's not like she doodled and then it happened to look sort of like a person.

When it rains, it pours

Either I've suddenly gotten some mad time-management skills or I've been just about to explode from the lack of creative outlets, but 3 posts in one day? Wow. Oh, and I found the USB cord, so we're up and running again.

Last weekend was cold and rainy here. We were at a loss for what to do to entertain ourselves. Kevin had a great idea to go to Dave and Buster's, which is a large indoor arcade/restaurant. We invited Anna's BFF and her parents to join us and it was a great time.
Check out the smiles on all 4 faces in this picture. I wonder if this is what things will look like 14 years from now, when the girls are learning to drive real cars?

Skee ball!

Jack's obligatory weekend outing picture

So Not Cool

I just got an email from Babycenter.com with the subject line as follows: "Secrets to Sleeping Through the Night!"

I eagerly opened the email to see if there was any insight or helpful advice to aid us in getting Jack to be a better sleeper at night. This is the email, in it's entirety:

Sleeping through the night is one milestone every parent eagerly anticipates. You can't do much to control your baby's sleep patterns in the first few of months of life, but a little patience and a few tried-and-true tactics can help a lot.

All the Best,
Your Friends at BabyCenter

Rat Bastards. That was a dirty trick. All the best? Your friends at Babycenter? It's so not cool to mess with sleep-deprived parents like that.

Upper level management

Wow. Remember me? I have zero time to blog these days--this is not to say that there isn't anything to talk about (although, it's probably nothing exciting) it's just that I rarely get a chance to sit down and put my thoughts down and in the 15 or so minutes to myself that I get each day, I tend to spend that time peeing, eating and reading up on celebrity gossip.

In a nutshell, things are going ok here--it's really an adjustment though. Two kids is, as so many people told me, exponentially harder than just one. Just getting out of the house is a small feat. I have to make sure that Jack is fed before we leave. He has a pretty bad spitting-up problem, so after eating, he needs to sit upright for as long as humanly possible to keep the goods in him, so there's no feeding him and immediately sticking him in the car seat to hit the road. Also, his diaper needs to be changed before he eats, because if you feed him and then lay him down to change his diaper--"urp", yep...puke in his ears. Also, it seems as though my children have developed an uncanny ability to synchronize their pooping, so one poops, the other poops and then I'm suddenly up to my elbows in feces. This seems to always occur right as we're trying to get out of the house to go somewhere.

Also, the sleeping is just not happening--at least for me. My boy likes (and really, demands) that he be held while sleeping. This means that I spend much of my days holding a sleeping baby, while looking around helplessly at everything that needs to be done around my house. Also at night, the same rules apply, so I've succumbed to just letting him sleep with me so that I can get at least a couple of hours of sleep a night. Sleep training will just have to wait for now because Mama is tired.

On the bright side, it feels like we're finally adjusting to the time change. We've made a pact to get Anna into bed at a reasonable hour at night so that (if for no other reason) we can have a little calm before our bedtime. With each passing day, I feel like we're finding our footing a little better around here though. We've already attended two library storytimes, both of which went off without a hitch, (except for some minor drama when we left beloved "Lambie" at the library farthest from our house and didn't realize he was missing until naptime. Luckily, everything turned out well, but not before I panicked and loaded the kids back into the car to fly back to the library to retrieve him) so it's quite an accomplishment to log some time outside of the house with both kids. It builds my confidence but the idea of the grocery store with both kids in tow is still way more than I can fathom.

Another good thing is my "push present" from Kevin. I got this. Now, before you drag Kevin aside to tar and feather him for getting his wife a vacuum cleaner as thanks for growing and giving birth to his child, you should know that I asked for this. While many women might ask for diamonds as their "push present", I pulled Kevin over to the vacuum department at Target and told him this was what I wanted. Now, when time and children allow, I vacuum my family room and kitchen with much gusto.

Sadly, I can't find our USB cord to upload pictures from our camera to the computer, so new pictures of the kids will have to wait for now. Trust me though, they're cute enough kids.

Annoyance

I know that you want to hear all about the kids. Probably REALLY want to see more pictures too, huh? Well, it's not gonna happen right now. Sorry. I don't have time to wipe my butt anymore.

What I do have time for, however, is to vent about people who change their Facebook status so often that you get a play-by-play of their day. Do you really think that I care? The ones that really bug me go something like this:

"Mary is...enjoying a romantic dinner with my husband!!!"~2 min ago

Things to note: over-use of exclamation points; and wow...how romantic, as you whip out your phone to change your status over this candle-lit dinner.

Also annoying:

Passive aggressive use of your Facebook status:

"Mary is...mad that her co-worker, sitting in the next cubicle, won't answer the phone"~30 sec ago

Yeah, that'll solve the problem. Way to deal.

Ok, rant over. Now I'm off to wipe other human's butts and change out of my spit-up encrusted clothing.

Coming soon to a blog near you: Jack's birth story; more pictures of the kidlets; various and sundry ramblings about daily life.
